Dr. Mohammed Al Qahtani

Dr. Mohammed Saad Alqahtani is a distinguished Senior Consultant in Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) and Multi-Organ Transplant Surgery. He is the Executive Director and a founding member of the Multi-Organ Transplant Center of Excellence at King Fahad Specialist Hospital in Dammam, Saudi Arabia. He also serves as the President of the Pan-Arab Liver Transplantation Society (PALTS).
Dr. Alqahtani is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS). He trained in Transplantation and HPB Surgery at the University of Alberta, Canada, and completed a General Surgical Oncology Fellowship at McGill University, Canada. He holds a Master’s in Health Administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, USA.
Dr. Alqahtani has performed over 2000 complex HPB and transplant surgeries, including deceased, living, and split liver transplants for adults and paediatrics , with expertise in microscopic arterial reconstruction.

Pioneering Contributions

• Performed Saudi Arabia’s first liver transplant for colorectal cancer liver metastasis.
• Led and performed the country’s first domino liver transplant.
• Conducted the first hybrid dual graft liver transplant using domino and living donors.
• Established robotic liver donor program in KFSH-D
• Performed the first trans-organ exchange transplant in Saudi Arabia.
• Transplanted the smallest pediatric living donor liver (4.5 kg recipient) in the region.
• Transplanted the smallest deceased donor liver (5 kg donor) in Saudi Arabia.
• Chaired the National Liver Transplantation Committee at SCOT (2019–2023).
• Served as Chair of the Surgical Transplant Committee in SASLT(Saudi Society for the Study of Liver diseases and Transplantation)
• Successfully performed Saudi Arabia’s first National Kidney Paired Exchange Program.
• Led the first national dual graft liver transplant utilizing right and left lobes.

Dr. Alqahtani has played a pivotal role in advancing organ transplantation in Saudi Arabia. He founded the Renal Transplant Program at King Abdullah Medical City and developed the liver paired exchange program at King Fahad Specialist Hospital, one of the largest globally. His efforts have addressed organ shortages and pushed the field forward. Internationally, Dr. Alqahtani has collaborated with transplant centers across the Gulf region, including the Royal Hospital in Oman and King Hamad University Hospital in Bahrain, where he and his team performed Bahrain’s first liver transplant. With over 40 PubMed-indexed publications and numerous national and international presentations, he remains a global thought leader and innovator in multi-organ transplantation and HPB surgery.
