
Prof. Paul Barach
Professor Paul Barach is a practicing anesthetist, surgical intensivist and public health scientist, and a passionate believer in making a meaningful and positive impact on the lives of people and communities, and creating an environment where there are fewer barriers between the producers of research and the real-world need for learning.
He is expert in analyzing and evaluating the implementation of strategic change in surgical health and care systems. Over the past 20 years, Paul has extensively researched how to improve the quality, safety of complex patients focusing on interprofessional team-based Patient Safety & Organizational Learning; Quality Assurance & Risk Management; Lean Thinking & Service Redesign; Technological Innovation; Leadership and team education & development, an experiential learning. Paul has more than 20 years of experience as a physician executive and policy advisor in the military and academic medical centers and integrated university-based delivery systems in leadership positions related to care delivery, technology and health policy.
He was Chief Medical Officer and Chief Quality Officer of major academic medical systems with significant management experience, and has advised academic medical centers and large healthcare systems about strategic and operational development in complex healthcare and community settings. Professor Barach trained at Harvard University, Massachusetts General Hospital and the University of Chicago. Paul is an elected member of the lead international honorary society the Association of University Anaesthesiologists.
He holds Honorary and/or Visiting University Professorships at I m p e r i a l C o l l e g e L o n d o n, the University of Sigmund Freud University in Vienna, Austria; University of Birmingham, UK; The University of Queensland, Australia; The National Cancer Center in Seoul, Korea; Milan Polytechnic, Italy; Riphah University, Islamabad, Pakistan, and at the MUHAS University, Tanzania. He is Senior Lecturer and Senior Advisor to Dean, Jefferson College of Population Health, Thomas Jefferson University. Paul has designed numerous clinical and community health trials and has received research funding of more than $120,000,000 in federal competitive grant funding. He has authored or co-authored over 350 papers and book chapters (>15500 citations, H=59), co-edited 5 books and published his work in leading medical and public policy journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Annals of Internal Medicine, British Medical Journal, Lancet and more. Paul is Chair of the Accreditation Board of the global agency for Public Health Accreditation (APHEA).
